Abigail Bassett Reported On How Data Center Developers Are Overstating Jobs Creation

by | May 26, 2026

For The Verge, Abigail Bassett wrote a piece on “how many long-term jobs data centers actually bring to rural towns they build in.”

Bassett told Study Hall, “It turns out the answer is zero, and rural America is massively underprepared and as one expert I interviewed, ‘outgunned’ to understand the impacts that a data center might have on a small town. The story is a blend of local, economic, tech, and cultural reporting, and I’m really proud of it.”
